Delhi college student held for setting up woman’s fake social media account

A 22-year-old college student has been arrested for harassing a woman by creating her fake social media account and posting an obscene description on her profile, a Delhi Police official said on Friday.

The accused, identified as Ankit Kumar, is a student of BCA (Computer Science) and permanent resident of Bihar. He was residing in a rented accomodation at Uttam Nagar.

DCP Shankar Choudhary said a complaint was lodged by a woman at Cyber Police Station Dwarka alleging that on April 1, she received several vulgar calls from different people. When she discussed this incident with her friend, she came to know that a fake Instagram account was created by using her name and photographs. Her mobile numbers along with obscene descriptions have also been posted by the offender on the fake Instagram account.

Based on the woman’s complaint, the police registered an FIR under section 354 D and 292 of the Indian Penal Code at the Cyber Police Station Dwarka.

During investigation, the details of the fake Instagram account were obtained and analysed and with the help of all technical evidence the police zeroed in on the location of the accused at Uttam Nagar and apprehended him.

On interrogation, the accused disclosed that his girlfriend and the complainant were fast friends, which the accused didn’t like. The accused had on March 30 got into a heated argument with the victim and the complainant insulted him in front of his girlfriend, due to which he devised the whole plan to take revenge and created her fake Instagram profile.
