Ekta Tiwari has won the  Best Actress award at the  Delhi film festival beating out more established Indian actresses.

Ekta has been mainly featured in TV shows like ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ and ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’.

‘Chooda Ek Pratha’ which screened at the Delhi International Film Festival (DIFF)  is her debut film.

“I am proud to have got an opportunity to portray the life of Chanda, which spanned from age 14 to 25. It was not easy as I am not a teenager anymore. The fact that I could convince the jury that I was better than my competitors, including big names, is a feather in my cap.”

Talking about the film’s subject, the actress says, “Child marriage is still rampant in some parts of the country. It is called by different names in different states, like Chooda in Rajasthan, Chunari in Punjab and Nati in Bihar. Young girls are made to do house work and breed children, especially boys. While most of them are kidnapped and sold to households, there are instances of parents selling their daughters for money or to protect her from ill treatment. Our director Ravindra Rajawat has seen this horrendous practice with his own eyes as the protagonist, Chanda was the daughter of his household help.”

Besides DIFF, ‘Chooda Ek Pratha’ was also nominated for this year’s National Film Festival in four categories.

“It was no small feat to be bracketed along with the Priyanka Chopras and Kangana Ranauts of Bollywood,” she beams.

The makers are planning a commercial release of the film around April next year. “We had hoped to hit the theatres around December or January, but the demonetisation drive has dissuaded us from doing that,” she adds. – CINEWS
