Fake Abuse vs. Career Sabotage: Johnny Depp defamation trial

The biggest legal battle between a celebrity couple has begun and lawyers from both sides are bringing in the fireworks.

For the unversed, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star, Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, ‘Aquaman’ actress Amber Head are going head-to-head fighting a defamation lawsuit against each other.

Depp had slammed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard for an op-ed column she wrote in a British newspaper where she claimed she was faced domestic abuse in the hands of her then husband Johnny Depp.

The actor had accused Heard of breaching their divorce agreement and causing damage to his reputation.

In response to his defamation, Heard sued her ex-husband for a $100 million accusing him of trying to sabotage her movie career.

The case is now being heard in the court and Depp and Heard will be putting forth their stance in the case.

A few hours ago, the reports from the hearing stated that Amber Heard had accused Johnny Depp of sexually abusing her. Her lawyer made a sensational claim that one of the abusive incidents, was “a three-day blackout in which [Depp] abused and sexually assaulted Amber with a liquor bottle.” As a counter, Depp’s attorney accused Heard of faking the abuse to leverage her career.

A report by Popculture stated that Depp’s attorney during the Tuesday trial said that Amber Heard had several reasons to falsify the scenario and claim abuse as it would offer her the boost she needs in her career. The attorney also claimed that she managed to portray herself as the victim to gain sympathy from the masses as the cost of actor Johnny Depp’s reputation.

To prove his point, the attorney pointed out that Heard never filed a criminal complaint of the abuse, when she could easily have done so because she had filed a restraining order against Depp throughout their divorce proceedings. Depp’s attorney concluded their statements, saying, “In Mr. Depp’s fifty-eight years, not a single woman has ever accused him of violence.”

Heard’s attorney rubbished these arguments and claimed that the abuse was a fact. He also stated that her op-ed column was protected by the First Amendment Act and so she did nothing wrong. He further said that it was Depp and not Heard who was twisting the truth in order to gain sympathy and publicity. Heard’s attorney called Johnny Depp “an obsessed ex-husband hellbent on revenge.”

He also said, “For years, all Mr. Depp has wanted to do is humiliate Amber, to haunt her, to wreck her career.”

Since the hearing for the case has only just begun, there will surely be more accusations and recriminations to follow.

Further details regarding the legal battle between Depp and Heard will be updated as the trial unfolds.
