Fan-led campaign for #ReleasetheSnyderCut fuelled by bot accounts

Latest reports by Warner Bros. reveals that many bots and unauthenticated users were largely responsible for the massive fan-led campaign for Zack Snyder’s Justice League do-over movie demand.

In March 2021, HBO Max released Snyder’s super cut of his 2017 ‘Justice League’ film and this was following a huge online movement which demanded that Warner Bros. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.

As per Entertainment Weekly, WarnerMedia engaged a third-party cyber security firm who investigated the online furore demanding the director’s cut of ‘Justice League’. Fans of the franchise even posted violent images that featured Warner Bros. and DC Films President Walter Hamada.

There were two reports commissioned by WarnerMedia which were accessed by Rolling Stone and as per the reports it was discovered that “at least 13 percent of the accounts that took part in the conversation about the Snyder Cut were deemed fake, well above the three to five percent that cyber experts say they typically see on any trending topic.”

The report from Rolling Stone also said that bots used in social media fuelled the #SnyderCut army. The Rolling Stones reports concludes stating, “After researching online conversations about the Snyder Cut of the Justice League’s release, specifically the hashtags ‘ReleaseTheSnyderCut’ and ‘RestoreTheSnyderVerse’ on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, [the analysts] detected an increase in negative activity created by both real and fake authors.”

The report also stated, “Additionally, three main leaders were identified within the authors scanned on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram — one leader on each platform. These leaders received the highest amount of engagement and have many followers, which gives them the ability to influence public opinion.”

For the unversed, the demand for #SnyderCut started after Snyder left the production of the movie owing to a family tragedy and Warner Bros. had to bring in Joss Whedon to oversee the rest of the shooting and overhaul the dark tones of Zack Snyder’s production.

Whedon’s ‘Justice League’ performed really badly both with box office number as well as critics, which led to fans of Zack Snyder demanding that Warner Bros. release the original intended version of Zack Snyder.
