IIFA: ‘Shershaah’ in the lead with 12 nominations; ‘83’ gets 9

The countdown for the celebration of India’s grandest award ceremony, the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards has begun. The awards that are held annually in different international locations every year has chosen the Yas Island, Abu Dhabi as the venue for the event this year.

The 22nd edition of the IIFA awards will be held on May 20 and 21, 2022.

Ahead of the event, IIFA has released the list of nominees across the 12 popular categories that are awarded during the ceremony.

The category of Popular Awards includes, Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Music Direction, Best performance in a lead role (male and female), Best Performance in a Supporting Role (male and female), Best Story Original, Best Story Adapted, Best Playback Singer (Male and Female). The Lyrics award will be decided by global votes and this will go live from April 2, 2022 onwards.

Despite the pandemic looming large, 2021 was a year that saw some stellar performances and some beautiful stories come alive on the big screen as well as on OTT.

The list of nominations released by IIFA shows that the Sidharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani starrer ‘Shershaah’ is ahead of the pack with 12 nominations, Ranveer Singh starrer ‘83’ is a close second with 6 nominations, Abhishek Bachchan starrer ‘Ludo’ picked up 6 nominations, ‘Atrangi Re’ and ‘Thappad’ got 5 nominations and ‘Mimi’ got 4 nominations.

In the Best Picture category, 5 movies were nominated – ‘Shershaah’, ‘83’, ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Hero’, ‘Thappad’ and ‘Ludo’

Best Actor (Female) nominees include, Kriti Sanon (‘Mimi’), Vidya Balan (‘Sherni’), Kiara Advani (‘Shershaah’), Sanya Malhotra (‘Pagglait’) and Taapsee Pannu (‘Thappad’)

Best Actor (Male) nominees include Vicky Kaushal (‘Sardar Udham’), Ranveer Singh (‘83’), Sidharth Malhotra (‘Shershaah’), Manoj Bajpayee (‘Bhonsle’) and the late Irrfan Khan (‘Angrezi Medium’).

The full list of nominees is available to see on the official IIFA website. In 2021, the IIFA awards were postponed due to the pandemic and so in the 2022 IIFA nominees list we might find a few nominees from films that released in 2020 as well.
