Kurt Cobain’s 1969 Mustang Fender Blur Guitar which he used to belt out the iconic 90s song, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is going to be auctioned next month and it is expected to fetch nearly $800,000.
The Blue guitar was a prominent feature of the smash hit song video and it has racked up over 1.4 million views on YouTube. As per Martin Nolan who is the executive director of Julien’s Auction (where the guitar will be auctioned off) said that the 1969 Blue Mustang Fender “is arguably one of the most famous in rock circles.
Nolan said, “This is one of the most iconic guitars ever to come to the auction block, this is the blue Mustang Fender guitar, one of Kurt Cobain’s favourite guitars of all time.” He added, “The guitar comes with its original case and, also, the guitar strap, so that’s…really important to collectors when they come to the auction to know the originality.”
The Cobain guitar is the highlight of the Music Icons Auction which will take place in New York from May 20 to May 22, 2022. The auction will also be accessible online. The guitar will be on display along with other music icon memorabilia for a three-day sale in Hard Rock Café New York.
Martin Nolan added that since Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994 the blue fender guitar has been with Cobain’s family. The auction will also include other items, like an original Kurt Cobain artwork of Michael Jackson as well as one of his cars, a 1965 Dodge Dart. The artwork is estimated to fetch up to US $40,000 and the car is expected to fetch between US $400,000 to US $600,000.
Nolan said that the auction house has come up with a very conservative auction estimate of US $600,000 to US $800,000 for the iconic Blue Guitar and he said a portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to a mental health charity.
