The House of Commons is in the process of investigating MP Darshan Kang of Calgary Skyview, Alberta. A 24-year-old female staffer working out of his constituency office accused him of sexual harassment in June. The complaint was delivered to Chief Liberal Whip Pablo Rodriguez (Honore-Mercier, Que.), who then referred the matter to House of Commons’ chief human resources officer Pierre Parent.
As a first step to resolve the issue, the House tried mediation, through an external mediator, between the complainant and the respondent, but it did not work out. An external investigator was later hired to probe into the allegations, and recently turned in a report on the claims.
MP Kang is alleged to have offered the woman $100K to keep quiet about sexual harassment claim, said newspaper reports.
The allegations involving the Liberal MP initially surfaced in mid-August. According to Ottawa-based newspaper the Hill Times, the staffer filed the complaint in June with Chief Liberal Whip Pablo Rodriguez.
According to the father of the female staffer, Kang sexually harassed her over four to five years when he subjected her to “unwelcome hugs” and even tried to hold her hand during car rides.
The father alleged that once Kang brought her to a hotel room in Ottawa, offered her wine and then tried to remove her jacket.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government has created new processes to deal with misconduct and harassment allegations involving parliamentarians.
“I can assure people that our whip’s office and the human resources of the Parliament of Canada are engaged, as they must be, in this process. I have no further comment to make at this time on the independent process that is being undergone,” the Prime Minister said.
Darshan immigrated to Canada from India in 1970, after obtaining a pre-medical degree at the University of Indore. He first worked as a journeyman welder before becoming a commercial realtor he went on to be named the top realtor in his company and the fifth highest performer in Alberta. He was a two-term MPP before he successfully transitioned to federal politics by winning the riding of Calgary Skyview for the Liberals in the 2015 election.
The woman’s father said he wants Kang to “publicly apologize” and resign from office and is awaiting the outcome of any parliamentary probe.
The MP has taken a medical leave of absense, allegedly on account of stress caused by these allegations. – CINEWS
