World Menstrual Hygiene Day is annually celebrated on May 28, 2022. Ahead of the celebrations of the day UNICEF has roped in former Miss Word Manushi Chhillar to spread much needed awareness about menstrual hygiene in the country.
Manushi will be leading the global initiative of UNICEF called Red Dot Challenge – it’s a universally accepted symbol adopted by UNICEF which depicts the menstrual cycle in India.
Manushi will be promoting the need to educate girls of all strata with all the necessary information required to maintain hygiene, making sure there is quick access to feminine hygiene products as well as constructing required sanitation facilities.
Manushi Chhillar won the Miss World pageant in 2017, which was almost seventeen years after Priyanka Chopra won the title for India. Manushi has been roped in by UNICEF as Manushi is already involved in her own menstrual hygiene projects called Project Shakti which has been doing similar work in several states of India.
Speaking about this the ‘Prithviraj’ actress said, “Girls and women menstruate. They always have and always will. Yet taboos, myths, and misinformation continue to surround something that is so natural. These taboos may have far-reaching consequences, especially on young girls. They can prevent them from going to school, and participating in everyday activities and social and religious gatherings. In this day and age, ‘coming of age’ should not have any restrictions or obstacles.” Manushi Chhillar is soon making her big Bollywood debut in the big-ticket historical period drama ‘Prithviraj’ where she will star alongside Akshay Kumar. He is essaying the role of fearless warrior Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan while Manushi is playing his lady love Princess Sanyogita.
