This year’s Smita Patil award-winner Katrina Kaif spoke about the controversial subject of marital rape.
She spoke at the WeUnite conference which marks UN Women’s partnership with the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
She spoke against marital rape and made some pertinent points.
Incidentally, statistics show that a lot of married women keep mum about the issue and the law is totally toothless when it comes to this kind of rape.
“I know of educated women, who remain silent in the face of violence, because they are afraid to confront societal norms and have fingers pointed in their direction. Especially when the majority of our society fails to recognise marital rape as a crime.”
The actress further said: “I would urge more women to speak up. It is not okay to feel inferior or weak, because we are not the weaker sex by any stretch of imagination. On a daily basis there are shocking stories about the violent crimes against women. Yet, I can only imagine how many other crimes against women in India go unreported.”
The Fitoor actress also spoke about gender inequality in India. She was quoted saying, “India had a woman as the head of state, way before the United Kingdom, a feat United States of America has not managed to achieve as of yet. Which is why it is surprising to hear about gender inequality in India. And sadly we do. On a daily basis, there are shocking stories about the violent crimes made against women. Yet, I can only imagine how many other crimes against women in India go unreported,” said Katrina, before exiting the podium.
Katrina Kaif is not shooting for the upcoming film Jagga Jasoos at the moment and is paired alongside her former boy friend Ranbir Kapoor.
The film has been in the pipeline since a few years and the film-makers have confirmed that it will hit the theatres in 2017. – CINEWS
