Moscow, Dec 14 (IANS) Russia’s relations with the US would not be changed overnight even if Rex Tillerson is confirmed as new US Secretary of State, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov sounded a cautionary note as he warned not to “indulge in some kind of dream” that the battered ties would change overnight, Xinhua news agency reported.
US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday picked Tillerson, chief executive of ExxonMobil, as his Secretary of State. Tillerson’s appointment needs confirmation of the Senate.
Tillerson, who is set to retire from the company in 2017, has known Russian President Vladimir Putin since the 1990s.
Tillerson was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship in 2013, a state decoration to reward foreign nationals for their contributions to promote relations with Russia.
