Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi are collaborating together for the first time in Dharma Productions’ ‘Selfiee’. The movie is currently under production and director Raj Mehta had recently posted on his social media that nearly 90 percent of the filming was done.

As reported by Bollywood Hungama, with regards to this movie, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions seems to have signed an open-ended contract with Disney+ Hotstar. The essence of the contract is that they have outlined the terms for both theatrical release as well as direct to digital release.

The final call of the kind of release the movie will be taken after the production house and steamer platform see the final print of the movie.

A source reportedly told Bollywood Hungama, “The film is made on a very limited budget, ensuring backend profits for all stakeholders from just the pre-release deals. It’s an interesting structure that has been curated for Selfiee. Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar decided on signing an open-ended contract with their digital platform, Disney+ Hotstar.”

The source added further, “Basically, the team has locked two deals with the platform – one being direct to digital premiere followed by a Television premiere for a handsome amount, and second being, a four-week gap between theatrical and digital release. A final call on the mode of release will be taken on seeing the final print of Selfiee.”

Both Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar wanted to release ‘Selfiee’ during the Christmas holidays but that week is already jam packed with several big releases and so whether direct OTT release is better is being debated by Dharma Productions.

The source spoke about the movie and its genre and said, “Selfiee isn’t exactly an out-and-out commercial film, but more of a comic thriller. Though there are big names involved in the film, this isn’t a theatrical genre and no one is sure about the numbers that the film will do theatrically in a non-holiday season. It’s all ifs and buts and that’s the sole reason for an open-ended contract, to safeguard the financial interests from all ends. A theatrical release would put some sort of burden on the film to perform, whereas a digital release would give big returns to everyone.”

For the unversed, along with the announcement of ‘Selfiee’ movie, it was announced that the digital partner of the movie would be Disney+ Hotstar.
