A plea on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 was moved to Delhi High court against Ranveer Singh starrer, ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’.
The movie’s trailer was released last month where it was revealed that the central plot of the movie is a satirical story surrounding female foeticide which is still rampant in several parts of India.
The objectionable content in the trailer is the pre-natal sex determination via ultrasound shown in the movie. As per the trailer, the doctor who is under Government order to not reveal the sex of the baby (as it is illegal in India), nevertheless subtly lets the pregnant woman and her family (in-laws mainly) know whether she is carrying a boy or a girl. The code word as mentioned in the movie is ‘Jai Shri Krishna (praise lord Krishna) means a boy and ‘Jai Mata Di’ (Praise Goddess Durga) means a girl.
The plea against the movie was filed by Advocate Prakash Pathak who cites that though the movie focuses on female foeticide and is all about ‘Save the Girl Child’ campaign, the trailer shows usage of ultrasound to determine the sex of the foetus which is strictly prohibited under the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act of 1994.
As mentioned in Live Law India, the plea filed reads, “The ultrasound clinic scene where the technology of ultrasound for sex selection is being advertised openly without censor and as per section 3, 3A, 3B, 4, 6 & 22 of the PC & PNDT Act, same is not allowed & hence the instant PIL.”
‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ has been directed by debutante director Divyang Thakkar and produced by Maneesh Sharma and Yash Raj Films. Besides Ranveer Singh, the movie also stars Shalini Pandey, Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah. It was scheduled to release in cinemas on May 13, 2022. It remains to be seen if this plea affects the release of the movie in any way.
