India has an entry to the 2022 Oscars – it may not be a feature film but it’s a documentary titled ‘Writing with Fire’, which has been nominated under the Best Documentary Feature for the Academy Awards.
The documentary has been directed by Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas and it traces the journey of a small community newspaper ‘Khabar Lahriya’ as it moves from print to online.
The highlight of the newspaper is that it is managed entirely by women belonging to the Dalit community of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The documentary was shot over a period of five years and this is the first time an Indian documentary has made it in the feature length category of the Oscars.
Now, this documentary has found a firm fan in global icon, Desi girl and Hollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who tagged the filmmakers and posted a congratulatory note for them on her Instagram handle. She mentioned in her story that she loved the movie. Along with a poster of the movie, Priyanka wrote, “Way to go team, ‘Writing with Fire’. Congratulations on a much-deserved Oscar nomination.”
‘Writing with Fire’ has been nominated along with ‘Attica’, ‘Flee’, ‘Ascension’ and ‘Summer of Soul’ in the Document Feature category.
This documentary has already bagged awards in several film festivals including 2 awards at the Sundance Film Festival, USA.
Director, Rintu Thomas had shared a tweet last month when the nominations were announced. It was a video of the team watching the nominations and celebrating ecstatically when their documentary is name is called out among the nominations.
