New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) The Rajya Sabha was on Wednesday adjourned for the day after repeated disruptions in the post-lunch session over different sizes of currency notes of same denomination.
As soon as the House met at 2 p.m., Congress member and former Union Minister Kapil Sibal again raised the issue of Rs 500 currency notes of varies sizes. He had first raised the matter on Tuesday.
“I have a few Rs 500 notes with me. One measures 151.5 mm, the other 152 mm, the third measures 150.5 mm and yet another measures 153 mm. Now I would like to know what are those machines which publish these notes.
“Because all this is done very scientifically, it has never happened before. You will not find any variation in the size of a dollar or a euro or any other currency of a democratic country for that matter,” he said.
As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) specifications, the new Rs 500 note measures 66 mm by 150mm.
“Since there are only four printing machines in India, so which printing machine is printing these notes which are different in size than the RBI specifications,” he added.
However, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien disallowed Sibal’s notice given under Rule 267 which entails suspension of scheduled business to start a discussion on the matter.
“I cannot suspend the House’s business for this. It should be discussed under some other rule,” he said.
At this, the Congress members trooped towards the the Chair’s podium and started shouting slogans. The Chair adjourned the House for 15 minutes.
But as soon as the House was reconvened, the Congress members were again on their feet, pressing for the matter to be discussed.
The government meanwhile pressed for a Bill to be passed first and then take up the discussion, but the opposition members did not agree to this.
After some haggling with the government side and the Chair, the Congress MPs again came near the podium and started raising slogans. Kurien subsequently adjourned the House for the day amidst ruckus.
