Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Jersey’ is a flop at the box office

Shahid Kapoor’s much awaited highly anticipated ‘Jersey’ has found lukewarm response from movie goers. The movie received a very average response over the weekend and post the weekend, the figures were even more dismal as the collections reportedly went down by as much as 50 percent on Monday.

As per trade analysts the movie is expected to make only around $2.6 million and that is considered to be a big flop at the box office. The abysmal collections of the movie have been shocking as generally for any movie, the lifeline is the collection made during the opening weekend.

Sadly, for ‘Jersey’ with two big movies – ‘Heropanti 2’ and ‘Runway 34’ releasing coming Friday, it might find itself being discontinued from many screens. In a best-case scenario, from hereon, ‘Jersey’ can look at making a maximum of $3.2 million.

‘Jersey’ wasn’t expected to be a chart topper like ‘RRR’ or ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, but the movie had generated a lot of buzz and the original Telugu version was an award winner, so trade analysts were expecting a moderate hit, however audiences did not seem too interested in the movie and not many turned up to watch it on the big screen.

It is believed that the many delays leading to the release of the movie waned the interest of the audience, some who watched the movie also criticised its unnecessarily long run time as well. Some others felt since it was a remake, they would rather watch that as it is easily accessible on TV and YouTube.

This was Shahid Kapoor’s second remake movie – his last release ‘Kabir Singh’ was the remake of the Telugu blockbuster, ‘Arjun Reddy’. ‘Kabir Singh’ was a blockbuster hit and this may have prompted Shahid to sign on ‘Jersey’, as the story is heart warming and inspiring and the original movie even went on to win a National Award.

However, post Covid audiences have become very picky. It is also likely that movie goers are now forgoing watching certain movies in theatres that they think will be a better watch on streamers. ‘Jersey’ makers might find that the movie sees more successful response among audiences when the movie is released on OTT.
