Monday, July 18, 2022 marks the tenth death anniversary of Bollywood’s first superstar yesteryear actor Rajesh Khanna. The actor breathed his last on July 18, 2012 after battling cancer for a few years. He was 69 years old.
On his death anniversary, veteran actor and yesteryear co-star of the actor, Sharmila Tagore, who has worked with Rajesh Khanna in more than 10 movies reminisced about the actor and shared how the late actor was very generous with his friends and would often gift his friends as well as co-actors very expensive gifts, sometimes he would even buy them a house.
She also added that in return Rajesh Khanna would also have high expectations from those same people and this led to him having strained relationships with several people.
Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna were the “IT” onscreen couple of Bollywood in the 60s and 70s. Their movies together were huge hits and are still revered as classics. Movies like ‘Aradhana’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Safar’, ‘Daag: A Poem of Love’, ‘Aavishkar’, ‘Raja Rani’ and others go down in history as all-time classics.
As reported by HT, in the audiobook called ‘Rajesh Khanna: Ek Tanha Sitara’, Sharmila has spoken about her co-star and said, “Rajesh Khanna antarvirodho aur jatiltaon se bhare vyakti the, maine unhe apne mitron aur seh-karmiyon ke sath behat udhaar hote dekha hai…un par keemti uphar barsaate hue bhi dekha hai. Kabhi kabhi to wo unke liye ek ghar bhi kharid dete the, lekin badle mai vo kuch zyada hi umeed rakhte the jisse sambandhon mai tanav aa jata tha.”
(Rajesh Khanna could be called a man full of contradictions and complexities. I have seen him be very generous with his friends and co-stars. He would shower them with expensive gifts, in fact I have even seen him gift them houses but in return he would have very high expectations from those people, which led to him having strained relationships).
Rajesh Khanna had a stupendous movie career and in his Bollywood journey he managed to deliver 17 back-to-back hits between 1969 to 1971 and of these 17 movies, he played the sole hero in 15 of them. This was the reason he was coined as the first “superstar” of Hindi cinema.
Among the many movies he did, the most popular ones include, ‘Ittefaq’, ‘Aradhana’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Anand’, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Bawarchi’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Namak Haraam’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Prem Kahani’, ‘Sachaa Jhutaa’, among others.
Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia in 1973 and they had two daughters Twinkle and Rinke. The couple separated soon after and continued to live separately until Rajesh Khanna’s demise in 2012.
