Nearly a decade ago, in 2013 in an interview with an international magazine, actress Mallika Sherawat called India a “regressive and depressing” country. Priyanka Chopra, who, at the time, had not yet made her foray into Hollywood expressed her disappointment at Mallika’s statements.
She said she was offended and upset by the statement and said that Mallika Sherawat should not have said these things about India on an international platform.
In 2013, during an interview with Variety, Mallika Sherawat was quoted as saying, “So when I enjoy the social freedom in America and go back to India, which is so regressive for women, it’s depressing. As an independent woman, it’s really depressing.”
Later the same year, in 2013, at a UNICEF event, Priyanka Chopra reacted to Mallika Sherawat’s comments and said, “I think we are a progressive nation. I disagree that we are a regressive nation. We are all sitting here and talking about educating the girl child, taking our country forward. I think it’s a misrepresentation of what our great nation is on the world platform.”
She further added, “Calling India a regressive nation for women on an international platform. It was something of which I felt extremely offended by. When it comes to Mallika’s statements, I think they were very callous and I don’t agree with her. It was upsetting for me as a woman. It was upsetting for me as a girl who comes from India. I think it was extreme misrepresentation of our nation. I don’t think it’s fair.”
Priyanka Chopra, even after moving her base from Mumbai to LA maintains her steadfast love for her homeland and does not miss any opportunity to prove that she is indeed a ‘desi girl’.
She recently wrapped up shoot for the Russo Brothers’ Amazon Prime series, ‘Citadel’. She also has ‘It’s All Coming Back To Me’ and ‘Ending Things’ in her kitty of upcoming movies. On the Bollywood front, she has signed up for Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Jee Le Zara’ with Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt. Mallika Sherawat, in the meanwhile, is promoting her upcoming movie, ‘RK/Rkay’. The movie also stars Rajat Kapoor and will release on July 22, 2022. Mallika also recently revealed that she is shooting for a web series with director Gurmeet Singh, best known for his web series, ‘Mirzapur’.
