Dry and cracked heels can be uncomfortable and also embarrassing, it can become difficult if the cracks become painful.
If the heels become very hard dry, it can lead to fissures and result in cracked heels. For the most part, cracked heels are harmless, but if it goes untreated on time, it can create a skin infection – cellulitis.
It may seem like treating cracked heels is complicated but truthfully it is not and there are a few home remedies that can be tried which can help heels completely.
However, if despite all the home treatments, the heels remain cracked and dry, then there could be other underlying causes and it may be time to see a podiatrist.
There are three things that one can do to treat cracked heels. These are standard straightforward home remedies, but following these regularly, will give definite positive results.
Warm water soak
This is the first and oft-repeated remedy for cracked heels. Soak feet in lukewarm water. Do not soak in hot water, as it will only cause more dryness of the skin. After soaking in water for good 10-15 minutes, scrub the heels with a pumice stone.
The skin around the heels is usually tougher and thicker, more so when the heels are cracked. Soaking in water can make that skin soft and the pumice stone scrub will help remove the dead skin cells accumulating around the cracks. Do this soak and scrub process twice a week for at least 2-3 weeks and you will see the results.
If your heels are severely cracked and the skin is really tough and dry, then after the water soak, you need to use a thick moisturizer or a heel balm. Look for balms/creams that contain ingredients like urea or salicylic acid. Use these topically at least twice a day. These creams will help exfoliate and soften the skin of the heels
Honey for heels
The benefits of honey are countless. This easily available, always on your kitchen shelf ingredient, is an effective antidote to cracked heels. Honey contains anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Regular application on cracked heels will result in softer smoother heels.
Applying coconut oil after soaking feet in warm water is the best way to keep heels moisturized and soft. Coconut oil is also anti inflammatory so if the heels are bruised then these will help heal them. Importantly coconut oil will lock in the moisture and prevent heels from getting dry.
