It is a common problem everywhere- in a panic or due to unawareness, many end up calling the only number they can think of – 911.
This is a source of concern for the police who find themselves responding to non-emergency calls and increasing the risk of not being able to make a timely response to a genuine emergency.
Residents of Peel and other cities should know that 9-1-1 calls is for Police, Fire or Ambulance and the reason you call is for life threatening emergencies or a crime in progress.
If you happen to dial a 9-1-1 call accidentally, don’t disconnect in a panic stay on the line and pick up the cellphone or phone when you get an immediate call back from the operator because even if you have done so in error, they need to confirm this, verify who you are and where you are, just in case you are being held up at gunpoint or something like that.
