Marvel’s latest web series which aired on Disney+, ‘Ms. Marvel’ just completed its 6-episode run on the streamer on July 13, 2022. The series conclusion showed Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel finally suited up to join the MCU.
The series ended giving big hints about the franchise future and it also provided MCU’s first reference to mutants (X-Men) and the after-credits of the show was a good way to set up for the 2023 Captain Marvel, sequel – ‘The Marvels’.
In all, ‘Ms. Marvel’ provided plenty of connections to the wider MCU. But through the whole show, one huge moment which was not referenced at all was the Blip. Blip, for the unversed is the five-year period when half the world was wiped out because of Thanos’ snap in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.
The Blip is considered a huge moment in the MCU as it affected the all the franchises within the MCU and it had far reaching effects on both MCU heroes as well as villains.
Given that the lead character of the web series, Kamala Khan is a huge fan of the Avengers, it seemed remiss that the Blip was never referenced during the show. Also, the show does not touch upon whether Kamala and her family (who are integral to the show) survive the blip or not.
Finally, in an interview with The Direct, as reported by Screen Rant, directors of ‘Ms. Marvel’ Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah talked about whether Kamala and her family make it through the snap or not.
The two said that they never got a definite answer from the Marvel honchos but they have a working theory on it.
Speaking on this, Arbi and Fallah said, “Well, I would assume that, seeing how the family dynamic is with them, I have a feeling that none of them got snapped. But whenever we ask Kevin about, ‘What about The Snap or The Blip? Do we reference it at all?’ He would say, ‘Don’t worry about it. Focus on the story, focus just on that, don’t ask too many questions about other movies, other shows and all that.’ That was sort of his mantra for Ms. Marvel.”
Other web series like ‘WandaVision’, ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ referenced the snap as all the shows were set at a time period directly following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and so all these shows talked about the Blip and its impact on their world.
However, ‘Ms. Marvel’ has more in common with ‘Moon Knight’ as both these shows introduced two new characters into the MCU fold.
Vellani’s Kamala Khan will feature in ‘The Marvels’, which will include both Captain Marvel as well as Monica Rombeau who were both directly impacted by Thanos snap so it is possible that the sequel will address what happened to Ms. Marvel and her family during the blip. For now, it is not known if ‘Ms. Marvel’ will be back for Season 2. If so, the blip can also be potentially addressed in the second season.
