Zoya Akhtar: “80s and 90s movies never saw consent”

Zoya Akhtar is busy with her next directorial, the much-awaited Netflix project, ‘The Archies’.

The movie is a musical, live-action adaptation of the hugely popular ‘Archies’ comics. Zoya Akhtar is known for bringing forth cinema that centres around modern subjects and showcases progressive characters with stories that are relatable and relevant to the youth.

The ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ director recently voiced her views on representation should be the focus of cinema today so that everyone feels included and no one is left to feel like they are the only one of their kind – no feels left out or isolated.

In an interview with Hindu, she said, “Representation is when your identity or personality is validated in any kind of popular culture. It is not just women; other communities, disabilities and even men are also represented badly many times.”

Sharing further on the same subject, she said, “In the 80s and 90s, you never saw tenderness, you never saw consent. But we had molestation scenes. That affects the psyche of a nation. You saw women that had no right to express how they felt, and that definitely makes a difference. So how you’re representing is key, as people need to know they’re not alone.”

Netflix has partnered up with ‘Archies’ comics for the upcoming musical, which Zoya Akhtar is also producing along with Reema Kagti through their production banner Tiger Baby.

The movie is slated for a 2023 release. Nepotism haters had a field day when they heard the cast of Zoya’s upcoming directorial.

The cast of ‘The Archies’ is largely newcomers and most of the main cast comprises of star kids who will be launched into the movies with this project.

Shahrukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan, the late Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s daughter, Khushi Kapoor (Janhvi Kapoor’s sister) and Agastya Nanda, Shweta Bachchan’s son, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan’s grandson are all making their debut with this.

Beside these three, the other four main characters will be played by Mihir Ahuja, Yuvraj Menda, Vedang Raina and Dot.

A couple of weeks ago Zoya Akhtar took to her Instagram to share a teaser video of the upcoming movie and unveiled the first look of her central cast. The movie is set in the 1960s.

Her caption read, “Ain’t nothing like old school. Grab your gang ’cause the Archies are coming soon on @netflix_in!”

Besides this, Zoya will also soon star work on the second season of the web series, ‘Made In Heaven’. The lead character of the show is a gay man and speaking about this Zoya says she would like to see more LGBTQ stories and more than that have LGBTQ actors as part of the mainstream.
