Markham man charged with sexual assault, forcible confinement of a woman he met online

A 49-year-old Markham man has been charged with multiple offences in relation to a sexual assault.

York police said that in November, a 45-year-old woman reported that she had met a man online in the early part of the month. Being a recent arrival to Canada, she did not speak English and used an online translation app to communicate with him. The man invited her to his apartment in the area of Markham Road and Denison Street. Once there, the victim was confined against her will and sexually assaulted.

After identifying the suspect, police searched his residence on November 21 and arrested Ravinder Kumar Shinh. He is facing several charges including sexual assault, assault and forcible confinement.

Investigators believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward and they are being urged to contact police as soon as possible.

Anyone with information is asked to call the York Regional Police Sexual Assault and Crimes Against Children Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7071.
